You cannot understand modern culture without watching the media everyone else is watching. Therefore, I do not understand modern culture.

People are always trying to convert me to movie watching. Even my most extreme left- and right-wing friends agree : watching things move on a screen is an enjoyable activity. Especially with popcorn.

Now, I watch things move all the time, both objects and people. In a genius parenting move, my husband invented a wonderful game called Everything, Except the Floor, Is Lava. The goal is to force the floor to be cleared enough that the original game becomes physically possible.

You probably do enjoy watching videos, and so I uploaded a video from Canva to YouTube. Here it is! It has a good lesson, and only takes 14 seconds to watch.

Did you enjoy that?

Nothing, except perhaps an open miracle from G-d, could unify my friends as strongly as the conviction that my life would be inestimably improved by exposure to movies. Most often, Harry Potter is suggested for my first movie, something called "Friends" as my first show, and youtube clips of babies or kittens. Reading the Bible is honestly more fun, and it is much more relevant to everyday life.

This makes me a very special snowflake indeed. Most people I know, including some whose judgement I respect, watch movies regularly and seem to enjoy them. It so happens that I do not enjoy audio or visual media, so to be honest, my refusal to be entertained might be more of a long-standing personal eccentricity than a cultural critique.

Sometimes I want to get cultural references. I have gone so far as to Google a movie someone mentions, read the Wikipedia page about it, and then refer to it. This is because we accidentally named one of our kids, let's say, Yoda.

I had no idea ‘Yoda’ existed, but everyone has asked about Star Wars since then, forcing me to research the topic. The root y-d-a in Hebrew means "to know”. (2)

Even the 14 seconds of video watching my relevant and educational video was probably a waste of your time. Especially since it is the first time I ever made one.

While far from perfect, Everything Except the Floor Is Lava, by Isha Yiras Hashem, is guaranteed not to talk about money, power, or any sins. Most professional videos do.

From what I can gather, people are sinning openly in real movies. There is no discussion of enacting safeguards to prevent their sins from happening again.

Watching them waste time also steals precious moments from my life. Some argue that YouTube clips aren't that long. But they add up.

Thank G-d, I see actual flesh and blood children all the time, without a screen, and they never run out of batteries. They even provide real life entertainment.

In the past, we enjoyed the philosophical classic, "Why Must I Get Dressed Again, I Got Dressed Yesterday", as well as the situational comedy known as "Children Who Rise Before The Sun", a special beginning as early as 2 AM. See images below for the posted advertisements.

Nowadays we more often watch:

The one video I have ever watched, from beginning to end, was shown to my class in elementary school. It was called "The Red Balloon", and it has no words in it. At least there are no sins, either. It is a red balloon bobbing around France. I never followed the storyline, but the red balloon just kept on going. Until it flew away.

Maybe I would watch a sequel: Red Balloon in The Sky. Speaking of skies, I am in an airplane. Everyone here is lucky to be here with me, because while they were watching movies, I prayed to G-d that we should all be safe. This is the Traveler's Prayer: (4)

Praying is a good thing to do while traveling. I looked over a couple people's shoulders, and no one was watching anything interesting. From my perspective, movies are - at best - boring and superficial; at worst they are sinful.

You know what I do want to watch? A movie of the End of Days. It would be preferable to watch such a movie than to live through it. It sounds kind of scary.

It would be terrifying to be alive during the war of Gog and Magog, but the resurrection of the dead afterwards sounds really cool, and meeting my ancestors would be even better than an Ancestry DNA test.

The Great Day of Judgment is even more frightening than Gog and Magog, though. After that, I would stop writing this substack, because the words of Isaiah describing the future will come true. (5)

You now know why all names are omitted from this post. Silence and restraint are a form of internal discipline. They limit the self before they limit others.

You will see the lack of modesty in these excerpts. The hope is that the absence of my action will provide a space for moral evaluation to exist — without blaming, externalizing, anger, or fear.2

Technicalities: At first, I planned to quote everything directly. I ended up referencing documents by the number in the bottom right corner. ##### means a word or concept I do not wish to post on my blog was deleted. … means something was clipped in between. Modesty isn't about hiding the facts, and so the quotes are here for you to read.

Of course, making a spectacle of immodesty makes the situation much worse. We don't want to do that!

What we want in modesty is that it should be spontaneous and originate internally. Keeping this in mind, I searched through the files released by the Department of Justice for the word modest.

Strangely, the word modest is deployed 1,222 times in these emails! (Modesty, by comparison, appears only 3 times, as someone's fake name). You see the word modest functioning as a cover up — to hide a real lack of restraint, of modesty!

True modesty is quiet, and it limits our actions within ourselves and our society. It is not a way to justify our actions or our society or to market virtue.

When modesty disappears, it is replaced by a lack of acceptance of limits within the world around you. An immodest belief might go something like this:

If you can do something, you may.

If others are harmed, confused, displaced, or destroyed along the way, that collateral damage can be justified.

The best people are the ones with the most externally visible power.

Once power becomes a moral good, we stop using language to describe ourv limited reality, and instead use it to insulate ourselves from the reality of our frail existence. Even the very word modest.

In these emails, the word modest is used to make actions feel smaller, purer, more reasonable, more justified, and as a hedge to shield from criticism. It is all about the optics. It reminds us that being able to justify something is not the same as being allowed to do it.

Therefore, this post will not reveal any scandal or implicate anyone in particular. It is my effort to observe the word modest being used by those with immodest morals. It is a reminder that anything, including modesty, can be misused.

What kind of people, systems, and actions flourish when modesty disappears as a cultural moral value? When nothing inside their conscience, or outside in their culture, says “ENOUGH”?

Read it, and weep for our world.

1. La oferta inicial extrema de Trump hace que todos jadeen.

Comenzó a exigir el Premio Nobel hace unos meses, lo que disminuye la posibilidad de que este movimiento fuera verdaderamente impulsivo en lugar de una estrategia planificada. A continuación, exigió Groenlandia. Cuando cedieron a sus demandas, exigió anexarla.

Update 1/20/2026: President Trump is not a genius, virtuous, careful, or deserving of praise. Since so many people are stressed by his latest behavior with the Nobel prize prize and Greenland, this is updated with his latest extremely predictable moves. Understanding his strategy is helpful in not overreacting to everything he says. And do not miss the last image in this post!

Now that we've got that out of the way...

Only G-d knows why I have to be the one person in the entire world to write this friendly guide. Woe is unto me. And before we go any further, let me be clear: this isn't about supporting or opposing him. It's about understanding a pattern that's been hiding in plain sight for years.

You see, Trump has been using the same strategy, openly and predictably, for decades. Yet somehow, every time he does it, the world reacts as if he's just invented a new form of chaos. It's like watching the same kids going to bed for the hundredth time and still being surprised that they gave you a hard time.

Trump's Playbook is the only one he's ever used. Think of it as a four-step dance that never changes:

1. Start with an extreme opening bid that makes everyone gasp

2. Watch the world panic (and enjoy the free publicity)

3. Force a conversation where the middle ground shifts in his direction

4. "Reluctantly" settle for what was probably his real goal all along

It's like watching a master negotiator who only knows one move. But that one move keeps working because everyone mysteriously gets amnesia about it.

Let's highlight some of Trump's greatest hits:

Case Study #1: The Border Wall

Remember the border wall? First it was "Mexico will pay for a giant wall!" After months of chaos, we ended up with... some enhanced border security funding. Which was probably the realistic goal all along.

Case Study #2: The Jerusalem Embassy

Or the Jerusalem embassy move. First came "We're moving it immediately!" followed by panic, followed by... a gradual, planned relocation that most people eventually shrugged at.

Case Study #3: The Gaza Conflict

And now in 2025, we're seeing the exact same pattern with the Gaza conflict. First came the extreme statement, then the outrage, and now we're watching the slow dance toward a more moderate position that still gives him more than he would have gotten with a conventional opening bid.

Case Study #4: Nobel Prize and Greenland

Let's use Trump's Playbook, reposted here for your convenience, to understand what is going on.

1. Trump's extreme opening bid that makes everyone gasp.

He started demanding the Nobel Prize a few months ago, which lessens the possibility that this move was truly impulsive rather than a planned strategy. Next, he demanded Greenland. When they gave in to his demands he demanded annexing it.

So this time, there are several pieces of the extreme opening bid:

• Demand for the Nobel Prize, which gives everyone something dumb to attack him for

• Demand of huge landmass that he could, plausibly, want.

• Denial of trivially disprovable historical details, such as the existence of US documentation recognizing Danish sovereignty of Greenland.

The bad grammar, capitalization, and ego signaling are all signs that this is an intentionally outrageous opening position.

2. Now he enjoys the free publicity and watching everyone panic.

Trump owes a debt of gratitude to media for covering this exactly the way he wants them to, by hyperfocusing, taking it personally, and acting unhinged, as seen in the exhibited articles below, from the first page of Google results.

Trump enjoys this reaction immensely. He gets to play the bad boy in the room and gets tons of attention.

3. Then, he can force a conversation where the middle ground shifts.

This letter is a very crude way of resetting expectations. The Nobel Prize is a symbolic grievance only. It is being used to yank the international Overton window toward U.S. interests first, alliances conditional on good behavior.

One useful bit of evidence might be that if you look at the Potus Twitter account (not recommended), this letter does NOT appear.1

So it is not directed at his followers, but at his equals.

4. Finally, he can “reluctantly” settle for the real, boring, familiar goal.

He'd like more leverage (…The World is not secure unless we have…), more consideration of costs to the US (…and now, NATO should do something for the United States…), less expectations of peace at any cost (…done more for NATO than any other person since its founding…), and long term submission of the US placing army things in Norway (…Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China…). This is symbolized by gestures of respect (…Considering your Country decided not to give me…).

Therefore, calls to impeach him or 25 Amendment him or muzzle him are serious category errors that ultimately benefit Trump by leaving his desired message intact.

Text message from President Trump to Prime Minister Støre, on Jan 18, at 4:15 p.m.

Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. Follow Up: Performative Humility

And let's not forget his masterful use of performative humility. You know the routine: "Nobody knew healthcare could be so complicated," he'll say, or "People are saying I understand this better than anyone." It's a brilliant move that lets him simultaneously brag while appearing to be surprised by his own expertise.

Here, it will be something like:

I never even wanted the Nobel Prize, believe me! I don't care about it at all! But when you stop wars and there is only criticism for the Best Country In The World, you Have To Ask whether Anyone Else even CARES about peace anymore. Peace is good for the economy! I've always supported peace!

So that is what happened. Nobody wanted to touch the situation in Greenland. But Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, these are very bad actors, and all the smart and experienced people came to me saying, you’re the only one who can fix what Biden and Obama left over. No one will appreciate it. I know, I know, that’s just how it is when you do more for peace and security than ANYONE ever has since 1949.

Someone has to step up, and it falls to the United States, reluctantly, but we will handle it responsibly. MAGA!!!

SOLUTION: Backyard Chickens

The real reason people keep falling for Trump's pattern isn't about politics at all. The problem, you see, is that people don't have backyard chickens anymore. Only a mother hen to mother hens is practiced at dealing with this kind of misbehavior. 🐔 🐔 🐔

Stay with me here.

There's nothing quite like caring for creatures that turn your leftovers into eggs, have more dramatic meltdowns over a cloud passing the sun than a CNN reporter on election night, and expire frequently to help you develop a calmer perspective on life. Perhaps, if more people had that daily dose of chaos-management training, they'd be better equipped to handle Trump's negotiation style without losing their minds.

Now, I know what you're thinking:

“Isn't it reckless to negotiate this way, especially in politics?"

I mean, it is dangerous. It's a fair question. And yes, this approach comes with risks. Words matter, especially from powerful people. But here's the thing: this kind of negotiation happens all the time, just usually with less drama. The difference is that Trump does it publicly, loudly, and with cameras rolling.

What makes Trump compelling isn't his wealth or power. After all, the vast majority of rich, powerful people are thoroughly boring, and we never hear about them. It's that he's turned his wealth and power into performance art.

Understanding this pattern won't make you love or hate Trump any more than you already do. But it might help you avoid the cycle of panic and surprise the next time he makes an outrageous statement.

And if you really want to understand this pattern, it's all laid out in The Art of the Deal. He literally published the playbook decades ago. And while many wish we had candidates who might serve as better moral examples, dismissing Trump as simply dumb or cult-like misses the point entirely. In fact, he's masterfully gotten his critics to focus on exactly the things that will never damage him with his supporters.

So congratulations! You've now been initiated into the secret art of Understanding Trump. Use this knowledge wisely, and may you never again be shocked when he does exactly what he's always done.

Though if anyone's taking suggestions for alternative entertainment, I'm happy to throw my hat in the ring as world dictator. I will try to be even more entertaining than Musk and Trump combined. Let us make backyard chickens mandatory while we are at it.

Update: One of my children, upon reading the original version of this article, commented that he doubts that I could possibly be more entertaining than Trump or Musk, even with backyard chickens. Maybe Jeff Jacoby is willing to step up.

In 1285, an important Jewish scholar was imprisoned in Ensisheim, an imperial castle in then-Germanic territory.1 A high-profile rabbi seemed to King Rudolf I a uniquely valuable hostage, and in fact, the Jewish community were willing to do almost anything to raise the money. However, the hostage forbade anyone to ransom him.2 This medieval story is less politically charged than more recent examples. I hope this will allow us to engage in thinking about a foundational question: Can every human life really be priceless?34

Image text: Who should pay for healthcare? Should there be restrictions on immigration, and which ones? At what point is an infant considered its own human being? If someone is brain-dead, are they really dead? Should we mandate seat belts, or treat them as a personal choice?

Human Rights And Human Life

Every society has ideas about the value of a single human life. In the modern world, we see it in the belief that every person has inherent human rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948 as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.5 I have copied the Preamble into the footnote, and you should stop, look at footnote 5, and read it. It is inspiring and will make you feel better about the world.

Hold on to that good feeling. Surely, the United Nations has consistently upheld the principle of inherent human dignity since making this beautiful declaration. Right? Well. I'm trying to avoid provocative politics.

So try to think of one human being, anyone, who fully approves of the United Nations in practice, and is never disappointed by its actions. For your viewing pleasure, while you think:

It is easy to affirm that every human is equally important with great seriousness. All you need is to publicize continuous declarations. Why, then, is the United Nations unable to live up to its beautifully-worded ideals? Is the importance of every human being reflected in reality?

Jewish Sources On Humanity and Humans

Jewish sources are clear:6 All humanity is equal before G-d.7 We are amazingly diverse, but we are all the children of Adam and Eve. See image below for a beautiful quote:

But the Sages did not make these statements as a feel-good announcement. Surprisingly, this discussion of the importance of man comes up in the context of witnesses who do not wish to testify in a capital case! They must testify for the sake of justice in the world.

Why would these people refuse to incriminate someone of a crime? If the crime would recieve the death penalty, and they do not want to be responsible for the accused recieving the death penalty.

They are informed that they must testify, like it or not:

And further:8

When people do not punish evil, they perpetuate it. And when evil is punished, there is ‘song’, harmony of the world.

We all like songs, but finding the harmony is rarely easy in practice. What if saving one person's life could endanger many others, as in the classic trolley problem?9 What if paying one person’s bills means you cannot pay 200 equally necessary smaller bills for other people? What if honoring one persom will make another feel bad?

‘Tikkun Olam’ and Ransoms

Hostage-taking and paying a ransom is a clear case of limited resources.

On the one hand, every human could be the progenitor of the entire world. Thus, each person is priceless.

On the other hand, there are limited resources. What is the right thing to do in this situation?

• Should you pay, because of the principle ‘one life is worth an entire world’?

• Should you refuse to pay, as this would encourage future kidnappings?

The earliest source of Jewish Oral Law, the Mishna, soberly acknowledges the real human incentives.10 If saving one life will predictably cause more kidnappings, more extortion, and more danger in the future, then the ransom cannot be paid. Therefore, the conclusion is that one can pay only what the captives might be worth on the slave market.

One does not redeem the captives for more than their worth, because of “Tikkun olam” (literally, repairing the world.)11

Tikkun Olam is probably more familiar to the modern reader as the concept of ‘fixing’ the world. It has a narrower meaning in this text: the preservation of social stability.

• Consider the financial strain on the community. If ransom payments are huge, the entire community becomes impoverished. The “repair” is economic stability.

• Consider a preventive strategy. If kidnappers see that Jews pay any price, they will kidnap even more Jews. The “repair” is protecting the community from turning into an endless hostage market.

Maimonides, the original Jewish rationalist, says12 that there is nothing more important than redeeming captives. A Torah scroll is the most important item a Jewish community can have, but it may sell its holiest possession to rescue a captive. But what about ransoming the next captive?

Introducing The Maharam: Rabbi Mayer of Rothenberg

Rabbi Mayer ben Baruch of Rothenburg, known as the “Maharam”, was one of the great early authorities of medieval European Jewry. He is one of only three Rabbis described as “Light of the Exile”.

A rigorous thinker and prolific writer, the Maharam wrote almost a thousand responsa, which became even more famous and influential after his death. There are endless examples, let's use the two from the Jewish Encyclopedia. 13

• “Cursed be the woman who has a husband and does not adorn herself; and cursed be the woman who has no husband and adorns herself” (Responsa, ed. Prague, No. 199).

• The question whether a lawyer could bring into court arguments which he was convinced were false, he answered as follows: “No Jew may become guilty of such an ignominious sin against truth and justice” (Responsa, ed. Cremona, No. 246).

In 1273, with the rise of Roman Emperor Rudolph I of Habsburg, Jews faced heavy taxation.14 At the time, Jews were legally servi camerae regis (servants of the royal chamber), and their bodies and movement were treated as royal fiscal assets. England had expelled its small Jewish community. France expelled its Jews. Jews were blamed for every local crisis. Many Jewish communities began looking for a place to escape prosecution.

Some went east, a movement that eventually created the centers of Jewish life in Poland and Lithuania. Others went south. And some hoped to reach the Land of Israel, then under Turkish control, where the local leaders openly encouraged Jewish immigration for their own reasons.

The Maharam Attemps To Immigrate To Israel

The Maharam tried to join those going to the Land of Israel. In 1285, he quietly left Europe, traveling without fanfare. He made it as far as Lombardy.

On the road, he was recognized by a man named Kneppe15 who had met him many years ago. Kneppe was a bitter apostate who used his background and knowledge of Jewish life against Jews. He was captured and imprisoned.

Jewish communities across Europe gathered money. Wealthy individuals stepped forward. It was clear they would do anything for their leader.

Would they obey his refusal to be ransomed?

The Maharam believed that paying such a ransom would place every other Jewish leader in danger. After all, he was the prisoner today - but tomorrow they might take his students. The week after that, they might take the local rabbi, the judge, the teacher. The price on Jewish community leadership would be set by an emperor’s whim.

And so, he remained in prison.

Dying In Prison

He spent almost 8 years in captivity, but his mind was not imprisoned. Students were, sometimes, permitted to visit. He continued ruling on questions of law, and communities across Europe still turned to him for guidance.

Until his death on 19 Iyar 1293.

The story did not end there. The emperor refused to release his body without payment of the ransom. Anticipating this, the Maharam had written in his will that no ransom should be paid even after his death. Once again, the community obeyed him.

According to tradition, his body remained intact for years. Thirteen years later, after a new emperor rose to power, a Jew named Alexander ben Shlomo Wimpfen16 quietly paid to recover the body.

He asked nothing in return, except to be buried next to the Maharam. Their graves still stand today in Worms. It is astonishing that they survived the Nazi occupation.

Shaul Tchernikovsky, in his poem titled The Two Tombs (from ‘Ballads of Worms’) writes powerfully about this story. I've excerpted a few lines here. 17

How many and how many have sunk into the grave in the course of generation after generation,

And between them in the middle – and this one to that one are close –

Two souls of the heart-stone wear out all adornments.
It is the measure and the measure, it is the pure tongue:

The moral monument of Alexander Wimphen, and the moral monument of the Maharam.

Why This Story Matters Now

To me, this story is not only about medieval Jews. It echoes a universal question. What does it mean to value a life? How do communities and leaders make decisions under pressure?

And it also makes me reflect on our own times. American Jewish life is open and vibrant. It is also feeling the pressure of a world shifting in unpredictable ways. The situation is nothing like the medieval era. But there are faint echoes, the kind that make thoughtful people pay attention.

En 1285, un importante erudito judío y famoso rabino fue encarcelado en Ensisheim, un castillo imperial en territorio germánico. En ese momento, los judíos eran legalmente servi camerae regis (siervos de la cámara real), y sus cuerpos y movimientos eran tratados como activos fiscales reales. Un rabino de alto perfil le pareció al rey Rodolfo I un rehén excepcionalmente valioso, y de hecho, la comunidad judía estaba dispuesta a vender cualquier cosa para recaudar el dinero. Pero los Sabios no hicieron estas declaraciones como un anuncio para sentirse bien. Sorprendentemente, esta discusión sobre la importancia del hombre surge en el contexto de testigos que no desean testificar en un caso capital. Deben testificar por el bien de la justicia en el mundo.

‘Tikkun Olam’ y Ransoms

La toma de rehenes y el pago de un rescate es un caso claro de recursos limitados.

Por un lado, cada ser humano podría ser el progenitor del mundo entero. Por lo tanto, cada persona no tiene precio.

Por otro lado, hay recursos limitados. ¿Qué es lo correcto en esta situación?

• ¿Deberías pagar, debido al principio de que una vida vale un mundo entero?

• ¿Debería negarse a pagar, ya que esto fomentaría futuros secuestros?

La fuente más antigua de la Ley Oral judía, la Mishná, reconoce sobriamente los verdaderos incentivos humanos. Si salvar una vida causará previsiblemente más secuestros, más extorsión y más peligro en el futuro, entonces no se puede pagar el rescate. Por lo tanto, la conclusión es que uno puede pagar sólo lo que los cautivos podrían valer en el mercado de esclavos.10

Presentación del Maharam: el rabino Mayer de Rothenberg

El rabino Mayer ben Baruch de Rothenburg, conocido como el "Maharam", fue una de las primeras autoridades de la judería medieval europea. Es uno de los tres rabinos descritos como "La luz del exilio", y sus captores evaluaron correctamente su importancia.

Por qué esta historia importa ahora

My children recently decided that I can make it snow by snapping my fingers.

This has resulted in a lot of begging for me to snap my fingers so it will snow. A desperate search for parenting books on the topic revealed not a single book on Amazon titled, “What To Do If Your Children Think You Can Control The Weather.”

To those of you who knew me in childhood, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for what you had to put up with. I'm sorry!

And to those of you who did not know me in childhood, please note that this issue is already addressed in Psalms 148:8.

Dear Reader: I beg of you, pretty please take my word for this. I am very, very, VERY certain that snapping my fingers does not make it snow, and also fairly confident that my kids have never heard of this particular brand of antisemitic conspiracy and are simply doing theological-philosophical-physics experiments. On their mother.

I once heard about a rule that goes something like this: if you can imagine it, it already exists on the internet. Not so.

In fact, until now, not a single post on the internet mentioned someone with this specific parenting challenge. But from searching the topic, it seems that Jewish people deal with accusations of controlling things a lot, including the weather, though typically from conspiracy theorists and not their own children.

Don't you think that, if I could control anything in the world, anything at all, I would start with myself my children!

My Failed Attempts at Reason

These are the responses I tried first:

1. “This is ridiculous. I am not engaging with this. You know I have no control over the weather. I refuse to snap my fingers for you.”
Response: “Please mommy please! We really want snow!”

2. “This is ridiculous. Look, I’ll snap my fingers. No snow.”
Response: “Thanks mommy! I think I see a snow cloud! Can you do it again to make the snow come faster?”

3. “Only G-d controls the world.”
Response: “Yes, and if you snap your fingers He will make it snow!”

At this point, I realized that logic was not going to save me. If anything, it seemed to make them even more confident in their theory that I was the Secret Snowoman of Boston.1

At Least It Isn't Game Theory

I should note that this entire mommy-makes-snow era is actually an improvement from the recent “If you don’t hit me, you are a fish/cow” era. That finally ended when a very kind reader of this blog (thank you, RA!2) wisely suggested that perhaps we should get them a book on game theory, since they were inventing their own games anyway.

This was a really good idea. I recommend consulting readers of this blog for parenting advice, as I do. Thanks in advance!

On Amazon, I found a book called “How (Not) to Win at Games: A Child’s First Book of Game Theory.”3 It is written by Bin Hu, a professor of Game Theory, and his seven-year-old daughter, and it went over very well with our children.4 So I owe Bin Hu and company many thanks for helping my children transition from physically intense forms of intellectual mischief to less physically intense forms of intellectual mischief. And since this book has now shaped our household culture, I will say a few more words about it.

First, I really like the title: How Not to Win at Games. Everyone is fine being the winner. But how do you NOT win and refrain from throwing a tantrum?

Unlike most parenting books, this one guides the young reader through three classic game theory scenarios, using language appropriate for children who have not yet developed a theory of mind but have developed an advanced theory of fairness. The common theme is that when people try very hard to beat other people at games, they end up in a worse position as a group.5

Why Weather Books Won’t Save Me

I would like to think we could solve this with a bunch of books about weather. We cannot. They already have many books about weather. Mostly they are interested in severe weather and ball lightning.6

My instinct is that this whole mommy-snapping-makes-snow debate is really asking a religious question:

“Maybe G-d controls the world through natural cycles by creating snow when you snap your fingers. How do we know that is not true?”

And I don’t really know how to answer that question.

I believe that G-d absolutely can do anything. But, of course, He does not treat miracles like a vending machine. When He performs miracles, they are purposeful, directional, and attached to something spiritually meaningful. Not because some small children in Boston are bored and want to build a snowman before lunch. The idea that G-d just tosses out weather events on demand doesn’t match anything we actually believe about how He runs the world.

Inversely, they are forcing me to prove that G-d doesn’t make it snow when I snap my fingers. And I sort of see the logic. If G-d tells Moses to put out a stick and split the sea, why can’t their mother snap her fingers to make it snow?

If I say that one shouldn’t demand something from G-d on a whim, they would counter that, if it is important to them, G-d will care about it.

I'm not quite ready to face this.

One way to avoid the theological question is to sidestep the issue entirely by performing scientific experiments. 7 Every time the children ask me to snap my fingers, we can mark down on a chart that it doesn’t snow immediately.

ScientistIYH would point to the data, snap my fingers again, and add another failed point to the data. I did not end up making a fancy chart, but I was very careful not to snap my fingers when my husband told me that snow was predicted. Thus, so far, snapping my fingers has never resulted in snow.

Occasionalism, Or, Childish Weather Problems

They weren't really asking about snow, but about causality. What causes snow?

This all reminded me of something else entirely, the concept of occasionalism. This is a medieval Islamic school of thought that entirely denies physical laws: gravity doesn’t exist; G-d simply moves things downward.

To my understanding, one simplified version of occasionalism makes a mistake similar to something I sometimes see in popular science explanations: thinking we can break everything down and identify what it is.
But instead of breaking it down with forces and particles, occasionalism goes: “G-d.”

I am against this because I do not think we can understand the world to that level at all. G-d cannot be understood by humans, but nature, to some extent, can be understood.

So the better answer is: I do not know. What can I figure out?

And this is where my children unintentionally wandered into medieval Islamic philosophy: the belief that my tiny action - snapping my fingers - is the true cause of the snow. This makes nature merely the backdrop for G-d’s personal accommodation of their requests.

A cute thought, but not my religion.

Where This Leaves Me

So now I am considering two simultaneous goals:

1. Stop my children from insisting I control snowfall with finger snaps.

2. Answer the genuinely interesting the theological and scientific questions they are also asking.

At the end of the day, I want them to keep asking questions, but maybe fewer that involve me personally being responsible for the weather. And if someday they do discover that I have supernatural powers, I hope they remember that I am a woman who fears G-d, and will use them only as G-d wants me to.

Respuesta: “Sí, y si chasqueas los dedos, Él lo hará nevar.”

En este punto, me di cuenta de que la lógica no me iba a salvar. En todo caso, parecía darles aún más confianza en su teoría de que yo era el muñeco de nieve secreto de Boston.1

Al Menos No Es Teoría de Juegos

Debo señalar que toda esta era de las mamás hace nieves es en realidad una mejora con respecto a la reciente era de “Si no me golpeas, eres un pez/vaca”. Eso finalmente terminó cuando un lector muy amable de este blog (gracias, RA!) sabiamente sugirió que tal vez deberíamos conseguirles un libro sobre teoría de juegos, ya que de todos modos estaban inventando sus propios juegos.2

Fue una idea realmente buena. Recomiendo consultar a los lectores de este blog para que los aconsejen sobre la crianza.

En Amazon, encontré un libro llamado “Cómo (no) ganar en los juegos: el primer libro de teoría de juegos de un niño”. Está escrito por Bin Hu, profesor de Teoría de Juegos, y su hija de siete años, y le fue muy bien a nuestros hijos. Así que le debo a Bin Hu y a la compañía muchas gracias por ayudar a mis hijos a pasar de formas físicamente intensas de travesura intelectual a formas menos intensas físicamente de travesura intelectual. Y dado que este libro ha dado forma a nuestra cultura familiar, diré algunas palabras más al respecto.3

Primero, me gusta mucho el título: Cómo no ganar en los juegos. Todo el mundo está bien siendo el ganador. Pero, ¿cómo NO ganar y abstenerse de hacer una rabieta?

Por Qué Los Libros Meteorológicos No Me Salvarán

Me gustaría pensar que podríamos resolver esto con un montón de libros sobre el clima. No podemos. Ya tienen muchos libros sobre el clima. En su mayoría están interesados en el clima severo y los rayos globulares.5

Mi instinto es que todo este debate sobre mami-chasquea-productora de nieve realmente está haciendo una pregunta religiosa:

“Tal vez Di-s controla el mundo a través de ciclos naturales creando nieve cuando chasqueas los dedos. ¿Cómo sabemos que eso no es cierto?”

Y realmente no sé cómo responder a esa pregunta.

Creo que Di-s absolutamente puede hacer cualquier cosa. Pero, por supuesto, Él no trata los milagros como una máquina expendedora. Cuando Él hace milagros, tienen un propósito, son direccionales y están apegados a algo espiritualmente significativo. No porque algunos niños pequeños en Boston estén aburridos y quieran construir un muñeco de nieve antes del almuerzo. La idea de que Di-s simplemente lanza los fenómenos meteorológicos a pedido no coincide con nada que realmente creamos sobre cómo Él dirige el mundo.

Inversamente, me están obligando a demostrar que Di-s no hace que nieve cuando chasqueo los dedos. Y veo la lógica. Si Di-s le dice a Moisés que saque un palo y parta el mar, ¿por qué su madre no puede chasquear los dedos para que nieve?Si digo que uno no debería exigir algo de Di-s por capricho, lo contrarrestarían, si es importante para ellos, Di-s se preocupará por ello.

No estoy del todo preparada para enfrentar esto.

Una forma de evitar la cuestión teológica es eludir el tema por completo realizando experimentos científicos. Cada vez que los niños me piden que chasquee los dedos, podemos marcar en una tabla que no nieva inmediatamente. Hasta ahora, chasquear los dedos nunca ha resultado en nieve. 6

La científica IYH señalaría los datos, volvía a chasquear los dedos y a añadir otro punto fallido a los datos. No terminé haciendo una tabla elegante, pero tuve mucho cuidado de no chasquear los dedos cuando se predijo la nieve.

Ocasionalismo, O Problemas Climáticos Infantiles

Realmente no preguntaban por la nieve, sino por la causalidad. ¿Qué causa la nieve?

Todo esto me recordó algo completamente distinto, el concepto de ocasionalismo. Esta es una escuela medieval islámica de pensamiento que niega por completo las leyes físicas: la gravedad no existe; Di-s simplemente mueve las cosas hacia abajo.

A mi entender, una versión simplificada del ocasionalismo comete un error similar a algo que a veces veo en las explicaciones de la ciencia popular: pensar que podemos desglosar todo e identificar qué es.

Pero en lugar de descomponerlo con fuerzas y partículas, el ocasionalismo dice: “Di-s”.

Estoy en contra de esto porque no creo que podamos entender el mundo a ese nivel en absoluto. Di-s no puede ser entendido por los humanos, pero la naturaleza, hasta cierto punto, puede ser comprendida.

In the past, I posted the eulogy for Elizabeth Krukowski. That piece focused on who she was during her life. This year, let us talk about her impact on my life after her passing. The lesson is clear, but it took me decades to fully see it: Life is short, and you never know which interaction will matter.

‘Aunt Elizabeth” was not an aunt at all, but rather our step-grandmother, as my grandmother passed away while I was a baby. My best guess is that at one point, she wanted to be called by her first name, which my parents would have viewed as not respectful of our elders, and this was the compromise.

She was a retired literature professor from Miami University,1 and I was a child who loved to read. She was endlessly and generously patient with a strange little girl who asked too many questions and wouldn't stop thinking aloud.

I do not remember her ever criticizing me. I also do not remember most of what we talked about.

But I do remember one moment quite clearly.

During a conversation, she started to cry, saying, “Please remember me, please don’t forget about me, promise to remember me!” She had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

This was a strange request, and it hit me hard. I was an overly intense, always in trouble, unsatisfactory elementary school student.

Why turn to me? And if I remembered her, would it matter? Surely there were many more important people to remember her?

I was too young to understand the urgency, the fear, and the nakedness in that plea.

Aunt Elizabeth passed away on 6 Teves, December 18, 2004. My sisters and I stayed up as late as we could, reciting Psalms in her memory. We all attended the funeral. I cried, because I didn't see anyone else crying at the funeral, and there should be someone crying for the dead person at a funeral.

And then, as children do, I forgot.

Or at least, I thought I forgot.

Years later, old memories surfaced from wherever I had buried them. Slowly, I began to realize how much of myself had been shaped by one woman who feared she would disappear.

It was Aunt Elizabeth who taught me that remembering someone is a form of justice.

It was her voice that made me instinctively recoil from cruelty, racism, and supremacy.

It was her example that made me notice and care about the dignity of strangers.

And it was her influence, silent but persistent, that surfaced in so many decisions I made without understanding why.

When I was rejected from almost every high school I applied to, I didn’t have the self-awareness to connect my behavior to grief. But when an interviewer asked where my grandparents lived, I answered, without thinking, “In the cemetery.” I had living grandparents whom I loved, but I was still grieving.3

When my cousin Hayim Katsman was murdered on October 7, and I found myself learning Arabic as an act of connection and peace. She would have liked that.

Remembering you, Aunt Elizabeth.

Thanksgiving season is a good time to celebrate a government of kindness. I am blessed to live in the United States of America, the biggest and best charity system in world history.

The famous1 Maimonides describes eight levels of charity, and to properly give thanks, we should take a moment to see how American policy and culture map onto Maimonides’ 8 levels of giving. 2

Remember, level 1 is the best level of charity!

Level 1: Helping Someone Not Need Charity In The Future

The opportunities afforded by Pell grants and many scholarships are absolutely level-one charity disguised as “education funding.” So are small business microloans. These enable people to be financially independent, so Maimonides puts them at the highest level of charity.

Union apprenticeships, trade school vouchers, the GI Bill, and job placement programs are incredible gifts not to be taken for granted. Maimonides’ top level of charity is found all over American bureaucracy.

Level 2: Giving When Neither Donor Nor Recipient Knows Each Other

American culture is full of examples of Level 2 giving. These are the federal safety-net programs, like SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, and unemployment insurance. When you pay taxes, you don't know who the recipient will be, and they do not know which taxpayers helped them. They are equal citizens, and this anonymity protects their dignity.

Level 3: Donor Knows Recipient; But Recipient Does Not Know The Donor

You see this in almost every public list of charitable donors in the United States. The top donor, ironically the most generous person, is nearly always anonymous to the public. (If they are known to the recipient, it is the lower level 4).

Think of a landlord not raising rent. Or a philanthropist who funds a specific family through a spiritual leader.

As Maimonides points out, this is the only workable system when there is rampant corruption, such as in third world countries. Levels 1 and 2 rely on well functioning institutions, but if these do not exist, it is best to bypass them and give directly, but anonymously, to preserve dignity.

Level 4: Recipient Knows Donor; Donor Does Not Know Recipient

The United States has extremely broad benefit programs wherever there is an institutional need that is difficult for individuals to address in an effective way. These programs includes rental assistance, which can change from month to month, Section 8 vouchers, and SSI disability, which are administered at such a large scale that there is little shame. The recipient knows they are getting it from the program, but the individual donor does not see the recipient. All the people involved have jobs distributing this fairly.

Think of food pantries, where people come at scheduled hours, when donors are absent. Holiday gift drives, school supply drives. If you qualify, you get, no shame, no awkwardness.

Level 5: Helping BEFORE Being Asked

Every year, there are blood drives which many people donate blood to - literally arm to arm, so the people who need it have it before they could ever ask. Neighbors who take out garbage cans or prepare shelters for their neighbors. People who pay off their friend's credit at the local grocery, or distribute meals following illness or childbirth also qualify for this level.

Level 6: Helping AFTER Being Asked

Panhandling is the obvious example, and GoFundMe is its digital equivalent. Sometimes it is more direct, asking friends for help covering expenses, or for childcare so they can work. These come with an enormous dignity cost, but it is still holy to do it.

Level 7: Giving Less Than Is Needed But With Kindness

The seventh level of charity is something along the lines of a random kind comment on the GoFundMe with a 10 dollar donation. Maimonides considers partial help, done with sincerity superior to full help while making the person feel bad. It is more important to show we care than to solve every problem in the world.

Level 8: Resentful, Begrudged Giving

One can switch levels just by their attitude. The same act can qualify as a higher or lower level of charity, depending on the attitude of the donor.

Think of charity done for social pressure by corporations and people complaining (not venting) about helping a relative. It is good! It is giving. It is just the lowest level.

Conclusion:

Goodness belongs to all humans; it is not the property of any one religion or country. And a country of kindness does not mean that all individuals are kind. However, its structure is founded on kindness to people in trouble or needing support. This is one of America's quiet glories.

Home and job placement, medical care, food, and public education are all examples of how this country really does that. This is supported by both sides of the aisle.

Maimonides gave us a list of levels of giving. And every one of them is represented in the United States of America. I thank G-d for being born in and living in a country where kindness is part of the system. May we be blessed to live in, and contribute to, a kinder world. May our level of charity always be rising.

What is the value of life before birth?

The previous post, about Dor Yeshorim, resulted in some heated discussion in the comments. Now we turn to abortion, which you definitely won’t have anything to say about.

But before we discuss abortion, we must talk about life before birth. When does life begin? Is all life equal? And the most provocative question: What is the value of life before birth?

Today we know that physical life is based on proteins, and instructions for replication via these proteins are biologically encoded in genes. Are genes life? If scientists can alter or manipulate these genes, does human life as we know it become adjustable, maybe even disposable at some points?1 What does it really mean to choose life?

Human Life >=< Other Life

Think about it. If you rank species by practical skills, humans are pretty low functioning - we can't even fly or breathe underwater! What makes our human DNA matter more than the DNA of the tiny mosquitoes who far outnumber us, or the enormous blue whales who sing across the oceans?

Some say it is the ability to use speech. Compare a grown chimpanzee with sign language2 to a tiny newborn human baby, looking like a very cute but slightly froggy potato. And the Bible talks about a donkey with sentience and the ability to fluently use human speech.

If speech makes us human, why isn't this donkey human?3

Biology, Morality, and the Soul

In Genesis, we are told that Adam got a soul. Then G-d commands humanity to be fruitful, multiply, fill and conquer the world.4 This soul is what makes us human, and what we are responsible to perpetuate, the human body as a vessel of the soul. And indeed, most debates about abortion end up being about whether you believe in a soul - or any spiritual dimension, at all.

But not everyone who thinks abortion is wrong because it is murder believes this for spiritual or religious reasons. A rule consequentialist who is an atheist may simply believe that there must be a line somewhere, for the good of society; the question is only where to draw it, and why.

Yet even those who are not rule consequentialists, don't consider souls or a spiritual dimension relevant, or are in any way religious, will sometimes feel qualms about destroying unborn life. They apply concepts like sentience, pain, and autonomy even to newborns. Many are uneasy about polygenic testing, even without a religious framing. For them, it is a theoretical philosophical question. In Judaism, the sanctity of life is a spiritual question, because life itself is seen as a divine trust, breathed into us by G-d.

The Potential for Life: Er, Onan, and the Heavenly Court

The story of Er and Onan, in the book of Genesis shows that even potential life can be considered life. Er and Onan were struck down by G-d for the sin of wasting seed.5 6 An embryo certainly has more potential than seed, and a pregnancy even more so.

The severity, in this story, is treated as spiritually similar to destroying a life’s potential. Therefore, it was “wicked in the eyes of the Lord” and they died for it - even though it is not categorized as murder in human courts.

Fruit Trees, Kabbalistic Sparks, and the Sanctity of Creation

All life is the eternal spiritual dimension G-d breathed into living things. Humans have a human soul, and other things, like trees, have a spiritual life force as well.7 We all have this spiritual dimension, and it is not subject to physical rules. Aggadic sources say that, when you cut down a fruit-bearing tree, their cry of pain echoes from one end of the world to the other.8

According to this, fruit tree huggers, at least, are preventing cries of pain! Spiritually speaking.9 Fruit-bearing trees are actually protected by Jewish law, and they may not be destroyed in wartime, even in a religiously mandated war, even though you may destroy other crops.10

Commentators give several reasons. Some focus on the inherent value of the trees themselves, since they sustain life and bear fruit. Others emphasize their utility to humankind, or see it as a moral discipline; or as a warning against wanton destruction born of anger or victory. Maimonides codifies this under the general law of “do not wastefully destroy”, which extends far beyond trees. 11 In short, life itself, components of life, and life-giving things are not ours to waste.12

Trees for People

The same principle applies to all humans. One desecrates Shabbat to save even a very early pregnancy, according to many opinions, because it already counts as established life in some measure.13 On the other hand, if the pregnancy threatens the mother's life, the pregnancy must be ended.

Is it a life, or half a life, or what?

Reflecting ancient times and politics, the Mishna proposes a unique case: a man half-enslaved and half-free. He was jointly owned by two masters, each with a 50% share, but only one freed him. Who can he marry?

The freed half made him a Jew, forbidding him to live with a maidservant. Yet the enslaved half barred him from marrying a Jewish woman. Jewish law says he cannot be left in such a limbo, as it violates his human dignity to have no legal way to start a family.

The Sages concluded that the remaining master is compelled to release him, invoking the verse “God did not create the world for chaos, but to be settled.”14

This shows that just as we protect potential life in the womb, we also protect the potential for life in society. Human dignity, and the ability to form a family, is itself part of sustaining life. The Jewish attitude is to support the continuation of life, of living families, of our humble daily human life. This is why, as we will discuss in the next section on IVF, couples who cannot have children naturally are helped in whatever ways are permissible in Jewish law.

Is my view authoritative? Well, it depends who you ask, and there are a lot of people to ask. 1 mother, 2 mothers in law, 3 rabbis, 4 doctors, 5 lawyers, and 6 embryos walk into a pear tree, but do NOT cut it down, but their arguing definitely makes a sound.

Here is a useful snapshot of the complexity. In Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Agudath Israel of America, an organization which represents Orthodox Jews in the United States, summarizes their view.15

• The first principle is sanctity of life. Laws that cheapen life endanger society. Thus, they opposed Roe’s framing of abortion as a “fundamental” liberty.

• The second principle is religious liberty. Because there exist cases where Jewish law may permit or even require an abortion, Jews must be free to follow Jewish law.

Until 40 days: Mere Water?

The Talmud describes the earliest stage of pregnancy, prior to 40 days as “mere water.”16 This phrase reflects how, at that point, the embryo has no discernible form of its own. At least without a microscope.

But now, scientifically speaking, you can already see the blueprint of the genes at conception. After all, polygenic selection occurs at this time. Could that mean it is fine to throw away embryos, as the embryo are like mere water unless you have modern technology?

Perhaps “mere water” means that, at this stage, the embryo appears to have no independent form of its own. Like a liquid, it takes the shape of whatever vessel you put it in. Right now it is inside its mother, and it therefore takes the form of its mother. As it is bound to its mother’s form, it has the same status of its mother regarding Temple-era rules what the mother is permitted to eat according to Jewish law (although it is a separate spiritual being.)17

The Talmud says that one is permitted to pray to change the gender of the fetus during these 40 days, but not after that.18 After 40 days, the gender is set.

What does this mean for the soul of the fetus? The Vilna Gaon teaches, and kabbalistic sources affirm, that there are holy sparks from the very beginning. It almost seems dehumanizing to describe a potential human made in the image of G-d as “mere water”, so why does the Talmud say that?19

This is because we need a way to distinguish what is visible and counts for action in this world, as opposed to the spiritual dimension reality of souls and sparks. In the physical dimension, before forty days it is water and thus there may be leniencies. In the spiritual dimension, a ‘soul’ is already present from conception, from the existence of seed, and any unjustified destruction of life at this stage touches a branch of blood-guilt in Heaven, even if is not judged as murder in human courts.

Pursuing the life of the mother

If any stage of pregnancy and labor turns possibly lethal for the mother, the fetus is labeled a “pursuer”, which may (inadvertently, but the result is the same) murder the mother. Until birth, Jewish law prioritizes the mother’s life. Once the head or most of the body has emerged, both lives are considered equal and one may not be set aside for the other.20

From a halachic perspective, before forty days a fetus is “mere water”, but f from a spiritual perspective, life potential is present even before conception, and certainly after. This is why life is sacred even in its earliest, most hidden forms, while practically, Jewish law does distinguish between the different stages for practical applications.21

Of course, none of this is simple or unanimous. The specifics of desecrating Shabbat to save even an early pregnancy are debated, and later authorities differ on how far that principle extends.

There are many nuances that tragically occur in real life, such as severe fetal abnormality, where life after birth would be painfully brief. These are addressed differently by various authorities, and are beyond my scope. I provide sources in the next section about IVF.

What all these debates share is their underlying seriousness: that life, even in its earliest and most hidden forms, demands moral and spiritual attention. Judaism’s consistency lies in its refusal to treat any life casually.

Christian vs. Jewish views

The United States is shaped by Christian ideological influences. While the majority of the US are Protestant, their denominations have widely varying views on life before birth. In contrast, the Catholic Church has a simple solution: life begins at conception.22 In American culture, this view dominates when speaking about the value of life.

Judaism’s view is both stricter about the sanctity of life, and looser about the metaphysics as applied to the biology. We don’t say “life begins”, but rather, “all life is sacred at every stage.” The one thing all the Jews agree on is that this life at conception is not the Jewish view.23 However, feticide without medical or halachic cause is completely forbidden. It is important to emphasize that ending any pregnancy is a serious decision and requires an expert in Jewish law to decide on each individual situation.

The early Christian opposition to abortion may reflect Judaism’s moral influence on the Greco-Roman world. Greek sources already remark on the Jewish reverence for life, distinguishing it from their own more permissive customs.24

Let us continue to discuss this in the next section, about IVF. No timeline, but it is in the works.

¿Cuál es el valor de la vida antes del nacimiento?

En mi último post, escribí sobre Dor Yeshorim. Eso dio lugar a una acalorada discusión en los comentarios. Ahora pasamos al aborto, del que definitivamente no tendrán nada que decir.

Pero antes de hablar sobre el aborto, debemos hablar de la vida antes del nacimiento. ¿Cuándo comienza la vida? ¿Toda la vida es igual? Y la pregunta más provocativa: ¿Cuál es el valor de la vida antes del nacimiento?

Tal como la conocemos, la vida física se basa en proteínas, y las instrucciones para la replicación a través de estas proteínas están codificadas biológicamente en genes. ¿Son los genes vida? Si los científicos pueden alterar o manipular estos genes, ¿la vida humana tal como la conocemos se vuelve ajustable, tal vez incluso desechable en algunos momentos? ¿Qué significa realmente elegir la vida?1

Vida Humana >=< Otra Vida

Piénsenlo. Si clasificas las especies por sus habilidades prácticas, los humanos funcionan con bastante bajo rendimiento; ¡ni siquiera podemos volar ni respirar bajo el agua! ¿Qué hace que nuestro ADN humano importe más que el ADN de los diminutos mosquitos que nos superan con creces, o las enormes ballenas azules que cantan en los océanos?

Algunos dicen que es la capacidad de usar el habla. Compare un chimpancé adulto con el lenguaje de señas con un pequeño bebé humano recién nacido, que parece una papa muy linda pero ligeramente rana. Y la Biblia habla de un burra con sensibilidad y la capacidad de usar con fluidez el habla humana.2

Si el habla nos hace humanos, ¿por qué este burra no es humano?3

Biología, moralidad y alma

En Génesis, se nos dice que Adán obtuvo un alma. Entonces Di-s ordena a la humanidad que sea fructífera, se multiplique, llene y conquiste el mundo. Esta alma es lo que nos hace humanos, y lo que somos responsables de perpetuar, el cuerpo humano como un conteneder del alma. Aplican conceptos como sensibilidad, dolor y autonomía incluso a los recién nacidos. Muchos se sienten incómodos con las pruebas poligénicas, incluso sin un encuadre religioso. Para ellos, es una cuestión filosófica teórica. En el judaísmo, la santidad de la vida es una cuestión espiritual, porque la vida misma es vista como una confianza divina, otorgada a nosotros por Di-s.

El potencial para la vida: Er, Onan y la corte celestial

The recent election of Zohran K. Mamdani to mayor of New York City worried nearly all the Jewish people I know. Concern about politics is very valid and a huge attention draw to many highly intelligent people, who are not quite wise enough to fear G-d.

To be fair, every election in living memory has caused the intelligentsia to be concerned about the election results, no matter what they are. Good citizens do not generally like the people in power, because they are all politicians, and even if they do, by a stroke of luck, happen to like an elected official, they look at the voting patterns and worry about what that means for the United States democracy, foreign policy, economy, and their dating prospects.

It goes without saying that I, personally, prefer that every time someone is elected, it is someone who gets along with me so well that I don’t even have to ask them to subscribe to my substack. It would be great if every person in a leadership position only ever used their power in ways that I personally approve of. For example, everything I want my husband to do should absolutely be legally mandated, and everything that even slightly annoys me, like putting chocolate chips into oatmeal cookies, should be forbidden by law. And everyone should vote for this, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, my husband is unlikely to vote for this, and what makes this even less likely is that, nowadays, he is mostly the one who votes. At this point, please note that I am a registered democrat and minored in Political Science and believe that that voting is your civic obligation and really really important.

Unlike everyone else who didn’t vote, I have really outstanding excuses. I was literally giving birth during the 2020 presidential election. Right now I am recovering from pneumonia and struggle to breathe outside the house, so I limit my travels outside to doctor visits and picking up medicine from pharmacies, and I have Paperwork Processing Pathology that is so bad that I have gone years without figuring out how to correct two of my children’s birth certificates. One has the name misspelled, and the other claims I am ten years older than I am, and if I can’t get that fixed, you definitely shouldn’t expect me to figure out how to vote.

I thought of a religious justification, too. In Jewish law, women are not obligated in time-bound commandments. Voting is a time-bound civic obligation. Therefore, according to my religion, I should not be obligated to vote. Also, I haven’t been able to anyway, and it is always nice to have religious justification after the fact when I don’t feel like doing something.

This really annoys my husband, because he wants me to be the one who cares about voting. He used to claim he only voted because I made him do it, but he can no longer get away with that excuse. He will just have to own that he cares about elections. I care about them too, really I do, or I wouldn’t be writing this.

Back to Zohran K Mamdani, everyone is very upset about it, as far as I know. Now he is pretty bad, as politicians go. On the scale I just invented, of Churchill to Hitler, he’s probably closer to ... Hitler. He hates Israel, loves communism, and ran Yiddish-language ads, providing money to newspapers in insulated communities. These are facts. But facts are not enough to explain how serious the situation is in New York.

We may guess at some of the more obnoxious possibilities. He might change the name of New York to “York al-jadeeda” and declare it Muslim. The reason I think he would keep the York part is to honor York, England for expelling Jews in the 1200s. He won’t really mind if Muslims attack Jews on the streets of New York City. He already believe that Abraham almost sacrificed Ishmael and not Isaac. And worse.

As Jews, this should not surprise us. G-d has put us in exile for our sins, and no election result will affect that in any way. Only repentance, prayer, and charity can overcome a bad decree.

For the real leftists, I suggest praying to Allah if that’s more comfortable. Nothing will ever be comfortable about repentance, and charity is likewise an extremely difficult activity to engage in.

In conclusion, turning to a Higher Power is what will change your life, not an election.

I disagree with Scott Alexander's recent article saying polygenic selection is obviously a good idea for those who can do it. In his view, doing IVF and choosing the best embryo from a petri dish could be viewed as a normal parental investment, like yearly doctor visits, tutoring, or bicycle helmets. 12 This is wrong.

I respond in 4 parts.

1. Dor Yeshorim: decades before anyone thought of polygenic selection, Jewish communities had already found a way to make Dor Yeshorim, literally “straight generations” in Hebrew, without costly measures, without embryo destruction, and without status games.

2. The Jewish perspective on life before birth (and before death and after death)

3. IVF’s ethical, cultural, physical, and religious baggage, with emphasis on the unique burdens it places on women.

4. Framing a. response to polygenic selection: bringing it all together.

This is part 1, and while 2-4 are already 90% written, I cannot give a timeline for when they will be posted. Why I Chose Genetic Testing

Long before I met my husband, was interested in dating, or had even graduated high school, my genetic results were waiting for me, but I did not know what they were. I still do not know what they are, but I know my husband and I are safe from the worst genetic diseases. This was thanks to an organization called Dor Yeshorim.3

Dor Yeshorim visits Jewish high schools and takes a blood sample from every single student - mine was taken in 12th grade. At the time your blood is drawn, you are given a card with a number. Do not lose this card!4

One day, when you want to date someone, you will be able to exchange numbers and check for ‘compatibility’. Ideally, you exchange numbers before ever meeting. There are two possible responses: compatible, or incompatible. If they say you are incompatible, you find someone else to date. This works because most couples are introduced only after doing some research on each other.

Dor Yeshorim has been extremely successful in its stated purpose: to avoid creating couples who share the genetic time bomb of fatal recessive genes common among Ashkenazi Jews, such as Tay-Sachs. They also tests for serious diseases like Fanconi anemia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and others, see their website for a full list. 56

In my community, no couple meets until they exchange Dor Yeshorim numbers. I didn't date much before my husband, but none of the few I submitted came back as incompatible. I think the matchmaker did the actual number checking.

On their website, Dor Yeshorim says they have succeeded in protecting 11,308 couples from having children born with a genetic disease. They say that they receive 49,000 requests to check compatibility each year. 7 You will never find out your own complete results - to recieve those, you must do your own separate screening. There are many choices for this, but none have achieved the widespread acceptance that Dor Yeshorim has.

Their philosophy section states8:

“We believe, and the system’s resounding global success supports, that in keeping all testing results confidential we eliminate any potential stigmatization of individuals and families. Furthermore, statistics show that the knowledge that one is carrying a deleterious gene can be psychologically difficult. In the case of genetic carrier status, the freedom to not know can be more liberating than the right to know.”

On a close-knit community level, this is a very clever way to ensure that nobody can easily figure out where they stand relative to others genetically, if everyone uses the same program. There are, of course, many other companies that do genetic screening, such as Natera9, Jscreen10, and others. I have never used them and (Correction: the day after posting this, I was surprised by a bill from Natera in the mail. My memory may be imperfect.) I do not know anything about their systems, but they tell you all of your results, including what genes you are a carrier for. There is a lot of controversy on exactly what to test for and whom to tell. Additionally, some diseases are no longer as fatal as they were in the past.11

I think it is important to mention here that many of us are carriers; being a carrier is usually not relevant to daily life. If you aren't a carrier, you might have your own new mutations to worry about. None of us are safe.

There are conditions where finding out that you are a carrier is useful information. This is because a few conditions, like Duchenne12 or PKU13 have ‘carrier effects,’ and in these cases, a carrier (who has only one copy of the recessive gene) may experience mild or even partial symptoms of the full disease.

This is not always a bad thing! Sometimes, having one copy of the recessive gene may impart a ‘carrier benefit’.14 For example, there is a lot of evidence that protection from malaria can be conferred by being a carrier of sickle cell anemia or α+thalassemia.15

On the other hand, if someone inherits both the recessive gene for sickle cell anemia AND the gene for α+thalassemia, they have no protection against malaria at all!16 It is difficult to decide which genes you want to choose when they might cancel each other out like that. The Tay-Sachs trait might provide protection against tuberculosis, but at the price of 25% of the children having a terrible and fatal disease.17

With so many possibilities and complications, how does Dor Yeshorim select what to screen for? This is how they explain their philosophy:

Dor Yeshorim has a clear goal, which is to protect children from dying from lethal recessive genetic diseases. Preventing genetic diseases sounds a bit like eugenics, doesn't it? Jewish law may, however, permit abortion in some of these cases.

Meanwhile, it does not promise “better” children - only selects those who are going to live anyway. The system prevents anyone trying to rank potential matches by what they are carriers of, so the carrier genes are still in the population, which must continue to use Dor Yeshorim until gene therapies to eradicate the gene can be used.

Some will say, aren't you still influencing the gene pool? Well, by that definition, I think that vaccines can also be seen as “eugenics.” They permit people who lack sufficient natural immunity to certain diseases to stay in the gene pool. That’s not how I am using the term.

Dor Yeshorim deals only with fatal recessive genes where, without modern medicine, the alternative has been a short and tragic life ending in childhood.18

It does not promote traits like height, intelligence, or beauty. To the contrary, Dor Yeshorim has allowed an entire community for decades to use genetic screening for life-saving purposes without letting it become a status game.

Dor Yeshorim solved one kind of problem without dealing with the issue of when life before birth begins at all. But what happens if an embryo has already been created? At what point is destroying it considered murder?

To answer that, we need to look at the Jewish view of life before birth in part 2, understand some more of the context around IVF in part 3, which obviously is going to impact our view on polygenic selection in the direct response to Scott Alexander in part 4.
